Shaw

“I’ll finish up here, you get going,” Shaw said, clasping Vince on the shoulder as he swept up the garage workshop. It was mid-afternoon and raining hard. The TV weather report had announced floods were imminent all over the county.

“Uh…” Vince stalled, obviously wanting to go, but also keen to wait for Cait who’d called Vince and told him she wanted to discuss her car with him. Not Shaw.

Shaw knew Cait was having a bad time with business at the hair salon. Vince had mentioned it in passing; his wife knew almost everything that went on in the town. She’d always been the Tallahason oracle.

Shaw had asked Vince to get Cait’s car running for her, purely as a goodwill gesture. Although she’d mouthed off at him, he didn’t hold a grudge.

Vince had worked his magic, like usual, replaced a few hoses, changed the oil and plugs, and with a wave of his grease-monkey wand it was now ticking over sweetly. Vince was such an asset, Shaw had raised his weekly paycheck by 25 percent the moment he took the garage over. The look on the guy’s face was gold. And he’d not stopped smiling since. Vince didn’t know it yet, but he’d be smiling a lot more in the future.

“Uh, I think Cait’s expecting me to be here, boss. I told you she said she wanted to talk to me.”

Shaw understood he was concerned about the interaction between Cait and Shaw. Being friends with both of the families for a long time, he felt uncomfortable leaving what could likely turn into a war zone.

“I know she did. But I should be the one to sort things out with her.”

“Yeah, but...” Vince chewed his lip and rubbed the back of his neck..

“I’ll be nice to Miss Bailey, don’t worry. Go on, get on home to Grace before you need your boat.”

Vince looked outside with a concerned expression. “Okay, boss. If you’re sure?”

“I’m sure I’m sure.”

“It’s appreciated.”

Vince left soon after, revving his motorcycle, and scooting up the street in the pouring rain.

Shaw saw him off, after which he unlocked Cait’s car and placed an envelope addressed to her on the parcel shelf. He drove the car outside to the covered part of the forecourt. The envelope contained fifty dollars. This was the sum she was due to pay him for the tow. He wanted her to pay him first, to make a point, but he was giving it straight back in advance. That was the person he was. Fair. He hoped she saw that eventually.

She’d been right when she’d accused him of deceiving her about owing the garage. He’d thought about it since, and he really shouldn’t have hidden that fact. It wasn’t very professional. He should rightly refund the tow fee in her case.

Shaw drew down the metal workshop shutters, shutting out the escalating weather, and returned to the office by the side door. He settled down to wait, working through another section of his Kwikbooks system.

The rain was already coming
